Have you ever noticed that some people seem naturally happy the vast majority of the time, while most of us have our ups and downs, but generally stay in a mediocre state? Even as we eat healthy, study spiritual practices and learn how to put ourselves in a positive place, for most of us, it doesn’t seem to last. We make an effort to get there, and then shortly after we stop focusing, we find ourselves back in the same old mood.
The more we think of a particular story from our past, the easier it becomes to recall, because that groove in the brain has deepened, just as water continuously flowing in the same direction creates a larger groove for a river formation. This is also true with the way we feel. If we are used to feeling discontentment, misery, or anything less than bliss, then we cannot just jump to bliss and make it our normal state of being. We need to re-wire our brains. We need to get used to feeling happy.
Consciously put yourself in a good place as much as possible, and as time goes on, that new state of being will become more natural. This takes time. Don’t get frustrated and give up. You really are doing yourself a favor by always feeling as good as you possibly can. This also takes will. Will has resulted in amazing accomplishments, including healing deadly illnesses. It is certainly capable of making you happy. Decide that you will do this. Make a conscious effort to get to this state several times a day, giving yourself valid reasons to believe you are happy. Then watch yourself gradually blossom into a naturally happier being.
